εννεα

The word εννεα (ennea) means nine. It looks like a combination of εν (en), meaning in, on, at, and νεος (neos), meaning new or young, and so would literally mean "into/onto the new", perhaps indicating that nine is one step up from οκτω (okto), eight, or rather double-four (all one's fingers), and the final step before δεκα (deka), ten, which demonstrates completion of any set (hence the proverbial ten commandments, Abraham's ten camels, and so on).

For whatever reason, in Indo-European cultures the number nine has great significance: India's traditions speak of nine Navaratna, China's of nine forms of the dragon, Egypt has its Ennead (group of nine deities) and Greece its nine Muses, Norse mythology spoke of Nine Worlds, and Medieval Europe of Nine Worthies, which probably inspired Hugues de Payens to start the Knights Templar originally with eight fellows.

In modern times, the number nine has begun to symbolize armed law enforcement — probably not by accident, the K9 or κυων (kuon), dog, was domesticated long before it became the special helper of the κυριος (kurios), the man of authority or lord, the ποιμην (poimen), shepherd of all the human world. And note that the institutions we call "governments" are extensions of the military. The actual shepherds of our world, those who instruct and direct the governments, are invisible to us common slobs.

In Animal Farm, George Orwell has Napoleon's nine dogs drive away Snowball (see note below). In The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien lists nine virtuous Fellows and nine vicious Kings of Men (and in An Unexpected Journey, Gollum growls that he has nine teeth; see our article on διδασκω, didasko, to learn or teach). Late Bronze Age Egyptian scribes reported that their world collapsed due to nine roving Sea Peoples, which are possibly the same as Pharaoh Merneptah's confederated foe called the "Nine Bows" (mentioned in the Great Karnak inscription).

Atop the dome of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington D.C. stands the Statue of Freedom, depicting a lady wearing a helmet with nine stars — see Ephesians 6:17, where the noun σωτηριος (soterios), salvation, translates the ישועה (yeshua) of Isaiah 59:17, which of course relates closely to the name Ιησους (Iesous) or Jesus (and see Luke 17:17). In Hebrew, nine is תשע (tesha'), which could easily stem from an early conjugation (in the Hiphil stem, denoting causation) of the verb ישע (yasha'), to save. The form תושע (tohasha'), he or it will cause salvation, occurs in: Job 40:14, Isaiah 30:15, 59:16, 63:5, Jeremiah 4:14, 23:6, 33:16. Jesus was named after Joshua, whose father's name was Nun, which is formally unrelated but not unlike our word meaning nine.

And speaking of rings and lords: the names Galilee and Golgotha both stem from גלל (galal), to turn. John Lennon's controversial masterpiece was named Revolution 9, while according to Dante, hell has nine circles. Also according to Dante, heaven has nine spheres, whereas in Galatians 5:22, Paul lists the gifts of the spirit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control — nine in all.

Our word εννεα (ennea) derives from the broadly attested Proto-Indo-European word "hnewn", from which English gets the word nine. This word indeed looks like it might have to do with the PIE adjective "newos", meaning new, but whether this is technically so, or was even considered as so (and for reasons that were broadly understood), by the ancient speakers of these languages, isn't clear. But the Greeks delighted in a good pun and the prefix εν (en) is very common, and makes many words look alike:

  • εννεος (enneos) means flabbergasted (see below)
  • εννευω (enneuo) means to say something with a nod (see below)
  • εννοια (ennoia) describes an in-mind thing (a thought, an idea)
  • εννομος (ennomos) means legal
  • εννυχον (ennuchon) means nocturnal

And so on.

Our numeral εννεα (ennea), nine, is used 5 times, see full concordance, and from it come:

  • The adjective εννατος (ennatos), the ordinal ninth. It's used 10 times, see full concordance, and with the exception of Revelation 21:20, consistently together with ωρα (hora), hour, to indicate the ninth hour, or about 3 pm.
  • The cardinal number εννενηκοντα (ennenekonta), ninety. This word is used 4 times; see full concordance.

The adjective εννεος (enneos) means flabbergasted, and appears to be an invention of the Lukan author of Acts. It occurs in Acts 9:7 only and nowhere else in Greek literature, although it's clearly based on the word ενεος (eneos), meaning dumb or speechless (or stupid), which the Septuagint uses in Isaiah 56:10: "Israel's watchmen are blind, they all lack knowledge; they are all mute dogs, they cannot bark; they lie around and dream, they love to sleep."

Some commentators have proposed that Luke made a spelling error, but that's unlikely seeing the editorial liberties early copyists enjoyed (it would have been caught, by Luke himself, his first proofreaders, his original audience, his secondary copyists and his broader audience). It's much more likely that Luke deployed his literary expertise and created a whole new word, which still had an obvious meaning:

Paul's companions stood there, gaping at something utterly marvelous and never before seen; something for which there were no words, that warped their senses and left them a shake short of a Happy Meal. The scene brings to mind Luke's story of the ten lepers, of which all were cured but only one, a Samaritan, returned to Jesus. He then asked: "Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?" (Luke 17:17).

νευω

The verb νευω (neoo) means to incline or assent (to assume some bodily posture in order to signal or indicate). It stems from a Proto-Indo-European root "new-" meaning to nod or assent, from which Latin gets a handful of verbs containing the element nuo, all to do with bending, inclining and nodding. In German, this PIE verb became neudaz, to desire, aspire to, and hence to drive, urge of strive for (hence the English verb to need). All this suggests a strong link (albeit merely associative and probably not etymologically) to the PIE word newos, new, the Latin novus and the Greek νεος (neos), new — and note that ναος (naos) means temple, whereas εννεα (ennea) means nine (see above).

Our verb occurs in John 13:24 and Acts 24:10 only, but from it come:

  • Together with the preposition δια (dia), meaning through or throughout: the verb διανευω (dianeuo), meaning to gesture continuously or persistently or exclusively (Luke 1:22 only).
  • Together with the preposition εκ (ek), meaning out, from or of: the verb εκνευω (ekneuo), meaning to shake or shrug off (John 5:13 only).
  • Together with the preposition εν (en), meaning in, at, on: the verb εννευω (enneuo), to declare something in signs, to express in gestures (Luke 1:62 only). Note that this verb is rather similar to the adjective εννεος (enneos), speechless, and the word εννεα (ennea), nine (see above). In the story of man's information technology (which is the story the Bible tells; see our article on YHWH), perhaps the number ten expressed the whole complete set of abilities and skills that added up to a functioning language, and the number nine represented a developmental stage just shy of that, when words had not been formed yet and early humans still largely depended on universally accepted gestures (also see our article on the noun νεφελη, nephele, cloud).
  • Together with the preposition επι (epi), meaning on or upon: the verb επινευω (epineuo), meaning to nod upon, to nod with consent or confirmation (Acts 18:20 only).
  • Together with the preposition κατα (kata), meaning down from, down upon: the verb κατανευω (kataneuo), meaning to gesture down to someone. This verb has very broad applications, from nodding in assent, to nodding disdainfully to a lower positioned person, to lowering oneself in front of a higher person. This verb is used in Luke 5:7 only, where it describes the wild gesturing of sinking sailors "way down" to their colleagues in the other boat.
  • The verb νυσταζω (nustazo), to nod off, to be half-asleep, to doze (Matthew 25:5 and 2 Peter 2:3 only).

A brief note on Animal Farm

George Orwell's beloved fable Animal Farm of 1945 is not, as is popularly explained, a parody merely on the Russian Revolution of 1917, but rather on the whole wave of anti-monarchal populist socialistic revolutions that started in the United States of the Netherlands (in 1566), fueled anti-Catholicism but also triggered violent schisms in Protestantism (1609), which inspired the Mayflower Pilgrims (1620) and ultimately the formation of the United Sates of America, whose revolution (1776) inspired the French one (1789).

The surname Jones is the most common in the Anglophone world because in the 16th century, the name Jones (son of John) became a sign of anti-Catholicism and thus favored by the faithful to Henry VIII: the nobility of Britain, who subsequently deposited their offspring in every corner of the world, and had the most manumitted slaves named after them. In Animal Farm, "England" is the centralized global Empire and the Joneses are the peerage, with Mister Jones the biggest Johnson of them all: the failing monarch (perhaps specifically Louis XIV, George III or even Keiser Wilhelm II).

Ever since the Bronze Age Collapse (1177 BC), it has been understood as a law of nature that when the illiterate and drunk alphas of society come to their deserved end, their betas — comprising the administrative class: the scribes and bookkeepers and stewards of the treasuries, the doctors, the technicians and scientists — automatically produce the new alphas, with the understanding that the actual alpha is entirely sacrificial and purposed to distract from real power (as explained by Douglas Adams in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, 1979). This is why military alpha-dynasties rarely last more than a few generations, whereas the administrative beta-position is utterly secure and dynasties go on for millennia. When the Allies defeated the Nazis, they executed the alphas but captured the betas and took them alive and well into exile, to fortify their existing beta class. Because, really, it's the global network of betas, a cloud of them, to be entirely precise (Hebrews 12:1), that runs the world and always has. It's not a race and not a religion — although some races and some religions tend to be more prone to beta-ness than others. And although it always takes care of its own, it is simultaneously entirely devoted to the repair of the whole world (תיקון עולם, tikkun 'olam) and literally everyone in it. The betas exists solely to serve.

And who, throughout history ever since the Persian Empire, has consistently peopled that secondary administrative class of every society in the world, waiting like rats in the sewer for the ax to drop upon the alphas, and sometimes doing more than just waiting? — hence Winston's stereotypical phobia in 1984 (and what other Winston do we know?)

In Animal Farm, Old Major is a "highly regarded" and "majestic-looking" boar, and the word "Major", meaning Great One, is pretty much the same as the word Rabbi (also meaning Great One). Old Major is obviously modelled on Karl Marx, a Jew of German extraction, whose maternal grandfather had been a Rabbi in the Netherlands. The common Greek word for pig, namely χοιρος (choiros), clearly reminds of the noun χορος (choros), meaning choir and the noun χαρις (charis), social felicity, through which is salvation (Ephesians 2:8). This trope of usurping and havoc wreaking choirboys, who are proverbially more equal than others, remains strong in the Anglophone world: from Three Little Pigs (first in print, 1890; Gilbert & Sullivan's Three Little Maids from School is from 1885), to the surprisingly literate Piglet in Winnie-the-Pooh (1925), the unfortunate "Piggy" in Lord of the Flies (1954), Black Sabbath's War Pigs (1970), Joseph Wambaugh's The Choirboys (1975), Pink Floyd's The Wall (1979: "hey, teacher...! "; מקבת, maqqebet, means hammer) hence the ominous flying pigs (1987) and Hunter S. Thompson's Generation of Swine (1988). It needs to be immediately noted that Jews were to Britain what Blacks were in the US — the bizarre and offensive term "Jewish Question", to which Adolf offered his bestial "Final Solution", was coined in Britain in the 1750s — and that anti-Semitism was as perfectly normal in the literature of Britain as the ridicule of Blacks was in that of the US (Mark Twain jumps to mind). Orwell's painfully blatant disdain of Jews (see his first book, Down and Out in Paris and London, 1933) was mild and average, and certainly not as bad as, say, that of Ezra Pound. Or so explains John Newsinger in Orwell, anti-Semitism and the Holocaust (2007), and continues to explain that if Orwell had not failed "to comprehend the enormity, the significance, of the Holocaust", his review of Pound's work would have been far less forgiving. This review, however, came in May 1949, three years after the Nuremberg trials, a little bit late to play the "nicht gewußt" card. Orwell died in January 1950.

The Corsican Napoleon was not a Jew (as far as we know: he dubbed Jews the "most despicable of men" and wanted them gone by assimilation; see the so-called Infamous Decree) but he radically declared that the Jews of France were citizens: the Rights of Man applied to them, which meant that they were human and should subsequently dress and stand on their own two feet like humans. He may even have proposed a Jewish homeland in Palestine. That opened the floodgates! And before he could be stopped at Waterloo by the Seventh Coalition in 1815, the Jewish Question of Europe had become a great deal bigger and was all the more aggressively replied to. So no, Adolf was not an original but rather the cherry on the top of a cake of hell that had been simmering for centuries "in the vast ignorance of the world; a sleepless malice that festers and spreads" (to use the words of king Thranduil of Mirkwood).

Animal Farm concludes when "twelve voices were shouting in anger and they were all alike," with which Orwell stabs at Napoleon's Grand Sanhedrin (specifically the twelve questions it was posed and the nine laws it responded with) and endorses the myth that Jews comprise the populist head of some neo-Israelite cabal that's after world domination, and simultaneously responsible for communism and capitalism (hence also the piggy bank).

What Orwell and a great majority of his readers don't comprehend is that being a "Jew" has nothing to do with a religion or race or nationality (or some country somewhere) or even heritage or tradition — nothing with one's physical birth or cultural origin and everything with what one choses to apply oneself to, that which one selects to join, which countless individuals from all gene pools and cultures have joined: one unified stream of shuffling feet that all converge upon a road to a single destination, like a family that only consists of adoptees and whose sole objective is to serve the world and lead it to peace.

The Jews walk at the head of humanity's socially evolving herds. They're always one step ahead, and continuously call for the rest of mankind to follow but never force anybody anywhere. They're not lords on thrones or executives in high offices, but run Barter Town from society's bowels, without rank or title and without recognizable symbolisms, as a subterranean cloud of prayer, dreams and subconscious unity like a living Internet: arboreal elves, pixies and gnomes, dwarves mining mountains, possibly even the original Loch Ness monster; all as real as the little green zero on a Roulette wheel. They know where we would go if we could and had enough sense to choose, but the goy does not. And if the goy looks upon the Jews and sees a bunch of backward buffoons, then the goy has taken a turn into a dead end and his progressiveness is not progress but mere part of his enslavement and ultimate demise. The Jews have given the world language, writing, the postal service, schools, science, law and complex government and modern finance; which are all part of our liberation (though deadly when abused). And for their trouble they have been paid back in contempt and death (Matthew 23:33).

Jewishness comes in a multidimensional spectrum: from the intellectual bookworm to the urban capitalist to the galut adrift on the world's roads. And none of them are all too concerned with national borders and whatever alphas happen to think they're in control of things. Still, Jews are all about law — because law is the foundation of all language and script, all science and technology, all culture and all sophistication and even art and artistic expression: all intelligence is a matter of patterns, and all patterns are a matter of law (Psalm 78:2, Exodus 25:8-9, 25:40).

But Biblical Israel had no law enforcement, no "police". Instead, the ancients enforced laws by explaining them. Teaching people how things work, why they work that way, and what can be accomplished with the knowledge of how things work, is by far the best way to run a society. Countries who don't understand that require a police force. Enforcing law by means of a man with a billy club results in a slave state.
