The name Shelomith is applied to both men and women in the Bible. The female Shelomiths are:

  • The daughter of Dibri the Danite, whose son is executed on account of blasphemy (Leviticus 24:11).
  • The sister of Meshullam and Hananiah, children of Zerubbabel (1 Chronicles 3:19).

The male Shelomiths are:

  • A son of Izhar the son of Kohath, the son of Levi (1 Chronicles 23:18 — in 1 Chronicles 24:22 this man is called שלמות; Shelemoth).
  • Probably a son, and not a daughter, of Rehoboam and Maacah (2 Chronicles 11:20).
  • A family head among the returnees, and relative of Josiphiah (Ezra 8:10).

שלם

The verb שלם (shalem) means to be or make whole or complete, and is also used to describe a righteous recompense or proper restitution (whether positive or not). The familiar noun שלום (shalom) means wholeness, completeness or peace.

Other derivatives are: noun שלם (shelem), peace offering; verb שלם (shalam), to be in a covenant of peace; adjective שלם (shalem), perfect, whole, complete, safe; noun שלם (shillem), recompense; nouns שלמן (shalmon), שלום (shillum), שלם (shillum) and שלמה (shilluma), reward or proper recompense.

The name Shelomith may be the result of a feminine plural form, which would then denote intensity rather than number. From which word exactly the name stems is hard to estimate, and it may be any of them. Yet the only feminine derivative used in the Bible is the one meaning recompense.
