🔼The name Salome in the Bible

There's only one woman named Salome in the Bible, and she is mentioned twice (but only by Mark) as one of the women who stood with the Mary's under the cross of Christ (Mark 15:40, 16:1).

The Bible doesn't mention it but from the Jewish Roman historian Josephus we know that Salome was also the name of the daughter of Herodias (granddaughter of Herod the Great) and the mother of Bernice, Drusilla and Agrippa the Second. Her existence is mentioned in Matthew 14:6 and Mark 6:22; this Salome famously asked for the head of John the Baptist on a platter.

Tradition has always deemed it a grim coincidence that these two characters would have the same name, and the notion that the murderous Salome of Herod could end up amidst the Mary's at the cross of Christ has always been unilaterally rejected. We only have the Greek version of this name so we don't exactly know how it's spelled in Hebrew. But it's pretty safe to assume that the name Salome comes from the Hebrew verb שלם (shalem) meaning to be complete, sound, and the familiar noun שלום (shalom), meaning peace:
