🔼The name Jozabad in the Bible

Jozabad is the contracted form of the name Jehozabad, and there are quite a few men named Jozabad in the Bible, so many even that it's impossible to determine where the one stops and the other begins:

  • The first batch of Jozabads we meet are among David's mighty-men: One Jozabad the Gederathite (1 Chronicles 12:4) and two of Manasseh (12:20).
  • The next batch revolves around an overseer mentioned in relation to the reforms of king Hezekiah (2 Chronicles 31:13), who is probably the same as the Jozabad who worked during the reign of Josiah (2 Chronicles 35:9).
  • Then there is Jozabad, a son of Jeshua the high priest (Ezra 8:33), who might be the same as the one mentioned in Ezra 10:22 and/or Ezra 10:23, among those who had acquired foreign wives (see Ezra 10:18).
  • Nehemiah mentions a Jozabad twice (Nehemiah 8:7 and 11:16), and they might be one or two men, and they might or might not be the same as those mentioned by Ezra.
  • Finally there is Jozabad, the son of Shimeath, who together with Jehozabad, son of Shomer, murdered Joash at Beth-millo (2 Kings 12:21). This man is called Zabad in 2 Chronicles 24:26.

🔼Etymology of the name Jozabad

The name Jozabad consists of two elements. The first element is יה (Yah) = יהו (Yahu) = יו (Yu), which in turn are abbreviated forms of the Tetragrammaton יהוה, YHWH or Yahweh.

The second element of the name Jozabad comes from the verb זבד (zabad), meaning to give:

The verb זבד (zabad) means to give and the noun זבד (zebed) means gift. Both these words are used only once, in Genesis 30:20. These words' more common equivalents come from the root נתן (natan).

The name Jozabad is short for the name Jehozabad, and for a meaning of the latter, BDB Theological Dictionary suggests Yah Hath Bestowed, and NOBSE Study Bible Name List has the similar Yahweh Has Bestowed. Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names proposes the slightly different Whom The Lord Gave.
