There are three men named Jehozabad in the Bible, not counting those endowed with the contracted form of this name: Jozabad. The Jehozabads of the Bible are:
- A son of Shomer and/or Shimrith, a woman from Moab (like Ruth and Orpah), who conspires against king Joash of Judah and kills him. His comrogue is Jozabad, son of Shimeath, a woman of Ammon. Joash' son and successor Amaziah executes them both (2 Kings 12:21, 14:5, 2 Chronicles 24:26).
- A son of Obed-edom (1 Chronicles 26:4)
- A military leader under king Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 17:18).
🔼Etymology of the name Jehozabad
The name Jehozabad consists of two elements, the first being יה (Yah) = יהו (Yahu) = יו (Yu), which in turn are abbreviated forms of the Tetragrammaton יהוה, YHWH, or Yahweh.
The second part of our name comes from the verb זבד (zabad), meaning to give:
זבד
The verb זבד (zabad) means to give and the noun זבד (zebed) means gift. Both these words are used only once, in Genesis 30:20. These words' more common equivalents come from the root נתן (natan).
