🔼The name Agee in the Bible
The name Agee occurs only one time in the Bible. He's mentioned as the Hararite father of Shammah, one of David's heroes (2 Samuel 23:11).
🔼Etymology of the name Agee
There's no word in the Hebrew Bible that looks like this name, but scholars are generally confident that it must have existed in the Hebrew language at large, in the form of אגא ('ag'a), which conveniently looks just like our name. A comparable root exists in Arabic, where it means to flee. Hence it is assumed that the name Agee means Fugitive.
It may seem a bit strange to name someone Fugitive, but in the olden days people were frequently renamed after their deeds, notorieties or misfortunes, and we may assume that also in Biblical times fugitives abounded. In the New Testament this name returns in the Hellenized Latin name Phygelus, also meaning fugitive.
