φλεγω

The verb φλεγω (phlego) means to burn or shine like a fire. It's not used in the New Testament (the Septuagint uses it three times: Exodus 3:2, Isaiah 29:6, Joel 1:19). From this verb derives:

• The noun φλοξ (phlox), meaning a brightly burning fire or bright flame. This word denotes the flame object, and often occurs in tandem with πυρα (pura), meaning fire as concept (hence a "flame of fire"). This noun is used 7 times in the New Testament, see full concordance, and from it in turn derives:
  • The verb φλογιζω (phlogizo), meaning to set ablaze. This verb is used only twice, both times in James 3:6, where the tongue is said to set on fire the course of one's life, and is itself set on fire by Gehenna.
