טור
The verb טור (twr) doesn't occur in the Bible, so we don't really know what it might have meant to the Hebrews. But in Arabic a comparable verb meant to hover about or approach, limit or border. In the Bible the following derivations occur:
- The masculine noun טור (tur) meaning row. This word is used for the enclosing rows of beams or stones in Solomon's buildings (1 Kings 6:36, 7:12), or Ezekiel's temple (Ezekiel 46:23), as well as for rows of carved pomegranates and such (1 Kings 7:20, 7:24). This word is also used for the rows of stones on the high priest's breast piece (Exodus 28:17-20).
- The feminine noun טירה (tira), meaning encampment, doubtlessly named after the surrounding wall around the encampment (Genesis 25:16, Numbers 31:10, Song of Solomon 8:9).
