חכל

The verb חכל (hakal) isn't used in the Bible but this fairly common word occurs in Assyrian with the meaning of to be gloomy or dark and in Arabic with the meaning of to be confused, vague (and hence barbarous or speech-impeded). In the Bible this root is associated with a wine-induced lack of enlightenment. Its extant derivations are:

  • The adjective חכלילי (haklili), meaning dull or darkened (Genesis 49:12 only).
  • The feminine noun חכלילות (haklilut), dullness or darkness of eyes (Proverbs 23:29 only).
