הדד

The verb הדד (hdd) isn't used in the Bible, but a comparable Arabic verb means to make a loud noise (used for collapsing buildings, falling rain, roaring seas and braying camels). A related Arabic noun means thunder. In the Bible we find two derivatives of this root, which indicates that the verb was probably also known to the Hebrews:

  • The masculine noun הידד (hedad), meaning a shout or shouted cheer (Isaiah 16:9, 16:10, Jeremiah 48:33).
  • The masculine noun הד (hed), meaning shout (Ezekiel 7:7 only).

This root is also the source of the Hebrew variant of the name Hadad, belonging to a north-western Semitic storm god.

Note that the form הדד (hdd) also arises when the word דד (dod), beloved, is preceded by the definite article ה (he).
