🔼The name Togarmah in the Bible
Togarmah is a son of Gomer, son of Japheth, son of Noah (Genesis 10:3, spelled תגרמה, 1 Chronicles 1:6, spelled תוגרמה). By the time the prophet Ezekiel was writing, the family of Togarmah appears to have formed a town of sorts, namely בית תגרמה, that is Beth-togarmah or the House of Togarmah (Ezekiel 27:14 and 38:6).
🔼Etymology of the name Togarmah
The name Togarmah most likely originated in a language other than Hebrew, and therefore does not occur as a word in the Hebrew language. But, transliterated as is, at the heart of the name Togarmah sits the common Hebrew noun גרם (gerem), bone, which figuratively is used to mean self or strength. It comes from the verb גרם (garam), meaning to lay aside or save:
גרם
The verb גרם (garam) means to leave over, to save for later. Derived noun גרם (gerem) means bone and denominative verb גרם (garam) means to break bones.
