🔼The name Paltiel in the Bible
There are two men named Paltiel in the Bible:
- A son of Azzan of Issachar. He was among the tribe-leaders whom YHWH appointed to divide Canaan and assign the portions to the various tribes (Numbers 34:26).
- A son of Laish of Gallim, and the husband of Michal, the daughter of king Saul (2 Samuel 3:15). King Saul had first promised Michal to David, and when the latter became king, he sent Abner to retrieve Michal from Paltiel. Abner let the weeping Paltiel follow his wife until Bahurim, but then sent him home. In 1 Samuel 25:44 this Paltiel is called Palti.
🔼Etymology of the name Paltiel
The name Paltiel consists of two (or three) elements, the final one being אל (El), the prominent Canaanite deity, whose name became applied to the God of Israel, or the common abbreviation of Elohim, the genus God:
אל אלה
In names אל ('el) usually refers to אלהים ('elohim), that is Elohim, or God, also known as אלה ('eloah). In English, the words 'God' and 'god' exclusively refer to the deity but in Hebrew the words אל ('l) and אלה ('lh) are far more common and may express approach and negation, acts of wailing and pointing, and may even mean oak or terebinth.
The first part of our name comes from the verb פלט (palat), meaning to bring into security:
פלט
The verb פלט (palat) means to bring into security, cause to escape, or to deliver. Noun פלט (pallet) means deliverance. Nouns פליט (palit) and פליט (palet) mean fugitive. Noun פליטה (peleta) means escape or deliverance. Noun מפלט (miplat) describes an agent or place of escape or deliverance.
In between these two elements sits the letter י (yod), which probably serves to tie the two together by means of a possessive clause: פלט of אל.
