The name Hosah is applied twice in the Bible, once to a man and once to a town:
- The man named Hosah is a descendant of Merari, son of Levi, and one of the two gatekeepers who served before the Ark of the Covenant, after David brought it up to Jerusalem from the house of Obed-edom (1 Chronicles 16:38). Later, when the tabernacle service became fully organized, thirteen sons and relatives of Hosah were assigned duties (1 Chronicles 26:10). Hosah himself appears to have received gatekeeping duty, together with an otherwise unmentioned Shuppim (26:16).
- The town named Hosah was situated in the territory allotted to the tribe of Asher (Joshua 19:29).

For a meaning of the name Hosah, NOBSE Study Bible Name List reads Seeking Refuge. Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names overshoots it a bit and calls it A Place Of Refuge. BDB Theological Dictionary proposes simply Refuge, which is ultimately the most correct rendering.
