🔼The name Haggi in the Bible
The name Haggi occurs just once in the Bible, although technically the name Haggi is spelled exactly the same as the name Haggai. It's just pronounced slightly different. Why that is, nobody knows.
Haggi is the second son of Gad, who is the seventh son of Jacob and the ancestor of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Haggi became a bit of a tribal head himself, as his progeny is collectively referred to as the חגי, the Haggites, which is spelled the same as the name Haggi (Numbers 26:15).
🔼Etymology of the name Haggi
The name Haggi comes from the verb חגג (hagag), meaning to celebrate, hold a feast:
חגג
The verb חגג (hagag) means to gather for a feast or celebration, particularly those that were prescribed to occur yearly. Noun חג (hag) means feast or festival gathering.
The verb חוג (hug) means to draw round or make a circle. Noun חג (hug) means circle, cycle or circuit. Noun מחוגה (mehuga), meaning circler or compass.
The letter י (yod) upon which our name ends, may either create an adjective (festive), a possessive form (my feast), or may be a remnant of יה (Yah) = יהו (Yahu) = יו (Yu), which in turn are abbreviated forms of the Tetragrammaton יהוה, YHWH, or Yahweh.
🔼Haggi meaning
For a meaning of the name Haggi, Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names reads Exultation (a curious rendition since Jones refers to the name Haggai, which he translates as Festival Of The Lord). NOBSE Study Bible Name List and BDB Theological Dictionary both read Festal.
