🔼The name Cushi in the Bible
There are two men named Cushi in the Bible:
- The great-grandfather of Jehudi, who went to Jeremiah and Baruch with the request for the men to read Jeremiah's scroll to king Jehoiakim's closest advisors (Jeremiah 36:14). Jehudi ends up reading the scroll to the king himself, but at some point during the delivery, the king jumps up, cuts up the scroll and throws it into the fire.
- The father of the prophet Zephaniah (Zephaniah 1:1).
🔼Etymology of the name Cushi
The name Cushi is identical to the ethnonym כושי, meaning Cushite. It's a bit curious to have an ethnonym serve as a personal name, but it's not without precedent. The name Ibri is identical to the ethnonym עברי, meaning Hebrew.
The name Cushi means Cushite, and Cushite comes from the name Cush, the Biblical name of Ethiopia. Unfortunately, the meaning of the name Cush, and thus of Cushi, has been lost over time. Please revert to our article on the origin and meaning of the name Cush for some more details.
