🔼The name Cun in the Bible
The name Cun (or as some translations have it: Chun) appears only once in the Bible. It's the name of one of two Aramean towns (the other being Tibhath) from which king David levied a huge amount of bronze from which his son Solomon would construct the laver, the pillars and utensils for the temple.
David could do so after he had defeated king Hadadezer of Zobah and his allies, the Arameans of Damascus (1 Chronicles 18:8). In 2 Samuel 8:8 these two towns are called Betah and Berothai.
🔼Etymology of the name Cun
The name Cun is identical to the adjective כון (ken) meaning right or true, from the verb כון (kun), meaning to establish or fix:
כון
Root כנן (kanan) and hence verb כון (kun) mean to set, establish, fix, and so on. Nouns כן (ken), מכונה (mekona) and מכנה (mekona) denote a base or pedestal, noun מכון (makon) describes some fixed or established place, and noun תכונה (tekuna) means place or arrangement. Noun כון (kawwan) expresses a sort of ritualistic or sacrificial setup.
Adjective כן (ken) means right, true or honest, and adverb כן (ken) expresses confirmation: "thus" or "so". Verb כנה (kana) means to give a title or epithet or cognomen. Slightly unexpected, the noun כן (ken) denotes a gnat; the sort of proverbially plaguy insect that appears in huge swarms.
