🔼The name Azaniah in the Bible
The name Azaniah occurs only once in the Bible. He is the father of Jeshua, who is among those who sign the sealed document of the returnees (Nehemiah 10:9). It's probable that this Jeshua is the same as the high priest Jeshua, and that Azaniah too is a high priest.
🔼Etymology of the name Azaniah
The name Azaniah consists of two elements. The first part comes from the verb אזן (azen), meaning to hear:
אזן
The verb אזן ('azan) means to balance or equalize. Noun מאזן (m'zn) describes a merchant's scale or balance and noun אזן ('ozen) means ear. The denominative verb אזן ('azan) means to harken or hear and obviously describes the turning of one's face to where sound comes from.
The closing element of the name Azaniah is the appellative יה (Yah) = יהו (Yahu) = יו (Yu), which in turn are abbreviated forms of the Tetragrammaton; the name of the Lord: YHWH.
