רהב

The verb רהב (rahab) is difficult to translate, but it seems to have to do with experiencing a forceful intimacy. Thus the youth will "storm" against the elder (Isaiah 5:3), a young man will "importune" his creditor (Proverbs 6:3), the eyes of a dashing maiden may "bedazzle" the king (Song of Solomon 6:5) and make a poet whose prayer was answered "bold" with strength in his soul (Psalm 138:3).

The derivatives of this verb are:

  • The adjective רהב (rahab), meaning proud (Psalm 40:5 only).
  • The similar masculine noun רהב (rohab), meaning arrogance or pride (Psalm 90:10 only).
  • The feminine noun רהב (marheba) denoting boisterous behavior (Isaiah 14:4 only).
