קבר

The verb קבר (qabar) occurs all over the Semitic spectrum, always meaning to bury. In the Bible it's used in all expected ways, always of human burials and never (as HAW Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament notes) figuratively in the sense of concealing something, or in the sense of causing horror (Genesis 23:19, 2 Kings 9:10, Jeremiah 22:19).

Its derivatives are:

  • The masculine noun קבר (qeber), meaning grave or sepulcher (Genesis 23:4, Isaiah 22:15, Psalm 88:5).
  • The feminine noun קברה (qebura) or קבורה (qebura), meaning grave (Genesis 35:20, 1 Samuel 10:2) or burial (Isaiah 14:20, Jeremiah 22:19).

Note that this root contains the element קב (qb), which points towards a hollowness or hollowing.
