נוד

The verb נוד (nud) means to wander or move to and fro. It's used for the aimless wondering of a fugitive (Genesis 4:12), the flutter of birds (Proverbs 26:2), the shaking of reeds (1 Kings 14:15). Secondary, it's also used for a shaking or nodding of the head to show grief (Jeremiah 22:10, Isaiah 51:19), or compassion (Job 2:11, Psalm 69:20).

Derivatives of this verb are:

  • The masculine noun נוד (nod) or נד (nod), denoting the wandering of a fugitive. This noun occurs in Psalm 59:9 only.
  • The masculine noun ניד (nid), denoting the quivering or consolation of lips (Job 16:5 only).
  • The masculine noun מנוד (manod), meaning a shaking or wagging. This word occurs in Psalm 44:15 only.
