לון

There are two identical verbs לון (lun) that have comparable meanings (and which may very well be one and the same verb):

לון I

The verb לון (lun I), also spelled לין (lin), means to lodge or spend the night. This verb occurs in a literal sense of spending the night somewhere (Genesis 19:2, Judges 19:13), or is used figuratively: weeping spends the night (Psalm 30:5), righteousness lodges in a city (Isaiah 1:21).

This verb's derivatives are:

  • The masculine noun מלון (malon), meaning place of lodging or inn (Genesis 42:27, Joshua 4:3).
  • The feminine counterpart מלונה (meluna), meaning lodge. This word occurs only in Isaiah 1:8 and 24:20.
לון II

The verb לון (lun II), usually translated with to murmur, expresses a double sentiment of collective unity and collective opposition. In the Bible this verb is reserved to describe a unified protest of Israel against its leaders, and is used exclusively in Exodus 15-17 and Numbers 14-17. This verb's sole derivative, the feminine noun תלנה (telunna) means murmuring (Exodus 16:12, Numbers 17:10).
