גרש
The verb גרש (garash) expresses a strong force predominantly aimed at expulsion of some sort. It's mostly used to describe people being driven away from a place (Genesis 3:24) other people (Exodus 10:11, 1 Samuel 26:19), or the Lord (Genesis 4:14). This verb's derivations are:
- The masculine noun גרש (geresh), meaning produce, or literally, things thrust up or out of the ground (Deuteronomy 33:14 only).
- The feminine noun גרושה (gerusha), meaning expulsion (Ezekiel 45:9 only).
- The masculine noun מגרש (migrash), denoting lands and secondary villages surrounding a city (Numbers 35:2, Joshua 14:4). Scholars deem relations with the root unclear, but propose that these areas were known as such because that's where the people drove their cattle to or through. But maybe these areas were simply known as the outer-lands, as contrasted by the inner-city.
